Ghiberti used to be a well-known fresco painter before he started sculpting. It was a competition at the Baptistery of the cathedral in Florence to make a set of bronzes doors.
Ghiberti had re-invented the lost-wax casting of bronze-casting as it was used by the ancient Romans. This made his workshop special to young artists including Donatello, Masolino, Michelozzo,Uccello, and Antonio Pollaiulo.
Ghiberti has two men that he claimed to be his father as different times. Though the Ghiberti's first father died, the man that took Ghiberti in was Bartolo di Michele. Bartolo was the man that trained Ghiberti to be a goldsmith.
Lorenzo Ghiberti was born in 1378 in Pelago, Italy and died on December 1, 1455 in Florence, Italy.
